Title:

President of Bahrain National Federation visits WCC

Date:

27.01.2010

Description:

The President of the Bahrain National Cycling Federation, Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, was welcomed to the International Cycling Union headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland, on January 26th by the UCI President Pat McQuaid and several other UCI representatives.

On a general theme, the two Presidents talked about the existing opportunities to develop cycling not only in Bahrain, but also in the neighbouring Persian Gulf countries.

While giving an overview of training courses proposed at the World Cycling Centre (WCC), the centre’s Director, Frédéric Magné presented the President of the Bahrain Federation with an action plan aiming to raise the level of riders and the skills of coaches in this country. With this prospect in mind, Bahrain will register a coach in the Coaching Development session which will be organised at the WCC in May and June, and will send its Juniors team to the WCC to prepare the next UCI Juniors Road World Championships, which will take place in Offida (Italy) from 5th to 8th August 2010.

For Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, apart from raising the level of athletes – Juniors in particular – the development of the Olympic disciplines is a priority. With this in mind, he informed the UCI that his Federation would like to build a BMX track then, secondly, a velodrome. From now on, the UCI and Bahrain will collaborate on these two points. Mountain bike will also be the subject of a development plan in Bahrain.

According to its President, the Bahrain National Cycling Federation aims at least to double the number of licensed riders within the next two years.
